Went a a quick walk through the Rose Lake Wildlife Area with a friend this afternoon before work. It was refreshing getting out into the woods for a bit today getting some tranquility. Shot some macro of the beautiful fungus along the trail.

You Don't Need a License to do Science

Last Wednesday for Investigative Environmental Journalism we conducted a survey of macro invertebrates in the Red Cedar River. This is a simple test you can do to determine water quality in a river. Certain creatures can't live in polluted water so if you can find them then that tells you that the water quality is generally good, if these creatures are absent then that tells you that some form of pollution is preventing them from living there. More on that here.

These are a few photos from the class mucking through the water looking for the tiny guys. More photos can be found on my flikr here.

My New Dream Machine

Canon has just announced their new mid level DSLR the EOS 7D. It is taking up the mantel of the what the EOS 20D was back in its day, a camera for the serious photog to compete with the Nikon hundred series(the 300s in this case).

This is likely the camera I will look at first when I do my next camera body upgrade, likely in about 12 months.

Here are the vitals: The camera will have a 17.92 megapixel CMOS sensor, shoot at up to 8 frames per second, introduces a new 19 point AF system, shoot 1080 HD video and has ISO 100-6400 (and 12,800 in H mode). The camera is expected to retail for 1699.99 in the US starting in late September.

Rob Galbraith at DPI got a hands on test with the beta and has a great first look at the camera, check it out.

I also finished my first wedding shoot this past weekend, I'm still going through the images and I'll post some later this week.
